History

Siege towers were used during the construction as they helped to keep the pieces in place. After 12 long and hard years, the colossus was completed in 282 BC. Standing near the harbor entrance of Rhodes, the final product consisted of both bronze and stone. Thousands of visitors flocked to see the legendary colossus as rumors of it had spread through the countryside like wildfire. It was said that a grown man could barely wrap himself around a finger; the thigh was over 11 feet in width and the ankle was bigger than five feet tall.
