::ASTEROID BELT FACTS

-Asteroids are metallic, rocky bodies without atmospheres that orbit the sun.
-Too small to be classified as planets.
-Known as "minor planets."
-It is estimated that the total mass of all asteroids would comprise a body approximately 930 miles in diameter. (less than half the size of the Moon)
-It was created over 4.6 billion years ago.
-There are more then 100,000 asteroids in the belt between Mars and Jupiter.
-The biggest and most well known asteroid is Ceres.
-Range in size from pebbles to 600 miles in diameter.
-The majority of asteroids fall into three categories: C-type, S-type, and M-type.
-Many bodies havfe struck Earth and the Moon in the past.
-One widely accepted theory blames the impact of an asteroid for the extinction of dinosaurs.
