Planets

Mercury- Named after the messenger to the gods. It was probably given this name because of its swift movement through the sky; just as the god mercury had to move on winged feet.
Venus- Once thought to actually be to planets, the morning and evening star. This planet was named after the goddess of love. Most probably because of the timing of its appearance in the night sky.
Mars- Named for the god of war this planet was given its name because of its blood red color.
Jupiter- Named for the ruler of the gods this planet received its name because it is the biggest of the all. Interestingly the satellites of this planet are named for the different lovers encountered by this planet’s namesake.
Saturn- Saturn was an ancient Italian corn god. Perhaps once again the coloring of this planet played a large part in its naming.
Uranus- Named mostly because of the already existing traditions, Uranus was named after the ancient Greek god of the heavens. He is also the father of Saturn.
Pluto- Named for the god of the underworld, this planet was given its name because of its distance from the sun. It’s dark way out there. Also, the satellite for this planet is named Charon after the ferryman to the underworld.
