2 Groundhog-day. The Romans had processions with torches and candles on their celebrations welcoming spring. Christianity adopted the custom which had its origins in ancient fire-worship: they extinguish the fire in their homes and use only consecrated candles. The most widely known water-making tradition: on this day, bears wake up from their dormant state. They came out of their dens and if they find sunny weather and are able to see their shadows they return, because winter has not been over yet. To put it simply, if there is a warming up in this period, winter is still here to say.

3 Balázs. The patron of students. There is an ancient tradition which was carried out on this day of every year: students were recruited to school on this day. This is the day of another custom, as well, which is to scare evil spirits away from those who has aching or sore throats by making them inhale the smoke of burning apple cod.

6 Dorothy. It is one of the favourite days for organizing carnival parties.

10 Scholastics. The day to gather twigs for engraftment.

11 Alexis. The day of scaring away snakes. The first day of spring for mountain shepherds -- they made enormous fire in the mountains to scare evil spirits away.

14 Bálint The day for chickens to start hatching and for sparrows to mate and build nests. Lately, the Western custom of Valentine's Day found its way into the system of Hungarian traditions, and it is celebrated here, too.

16 Julianna. The counterpoint of the day of Dorothy.

19 Susan. She takes the snow away. The grass becomes virescent and larks start singing their songs.

24 Mathias, the ice-breaker. Where Susan was not able to take the frost away, Mathias breaks the reign of ice. But if he cannot find any ice, he makes himself.
 It is an important day for fishermans, as luces start to spawn. The luce that is caught on this day called "the luce of Mathias" and it means abounding in luce for the whole year.

The Carnival. The carnival period, that is, the open-tide is designated by counting six weeks (the period of the lent) backwards from the sunday (Easter Sunday) that is immediately following the first spring full moon (after February 21).
 A farsang a közelgő tavasz ősi örömünnepe, egyúttal a tél és a tavasz küzdelmének szim-bolikus megjelenítése. Számtalan gonoszűző és termékenységvarázsló álarcos, alakoskodó szokás fűződik hozzá (kongózás, kormozás, téltemetés, busójárás stb.).
 Most of the festivities happen on carnival sunday or during the few days immediately following it ("the tail of the carnival"): that is, Shrove Tuesday, the commencement of the lent, Ash Wednesday, the day that prohits work. This is the day when Christians get "ashed".
 A húsvét vasárnapig tartó böjtben húst és zsíros ételeket nem esznek, csak főtt tésztát, aszalt gyü-mölcsöket és a korpából készült leveseket.
 It happens quite often during the lent that stormy winds blow. But these usually bring spring.
