1 New Year's Day. The beginning of the year is the feast for conjuring luck and to chase away evil charms by spell-work all around the world. The whole day is characterized by happiness and the consumption of food and drinks. Felicitations and wishes for the New Year are indispensible parts of this special occasion.
  Weathermaking rites connected to New Year's Day exist in myriads. As a kind of hors d'oeuvre, here is one that mostly works: if there is no frost in January, March and April will bring it. Several auguries are connected to "first occasions": the first visitor in the New Year will be the husband of the maiden, the first thing one deals with will continue to be his primary occupation throughout the year, and so on.

  In several regions of Hungary, there exists a custom connected to this day, called "Csillagozás," or the Visit of the Three Magi, which commemorates the Betlehem visit of the Three Wise Men from the East.
  Houses are consecrated using water and salt (materials thought to chase evil spirits away), and they write "G. M. B." to the headsill using chalk. (Gáspár, Menyhért and Boldizsár are the names popularly attributed to the Three Magi, in Hungary).
