Being Prepared in Case of Tsunami

Not all earthquakes produce tsunami but an earthquake in your area (if you live near the coast) should be a natural tsunami warning. Move away from the coast and low lying areas.

A tsunami is not just one wave but a series of waves. Small waves could be followed by larger waves. Stay away until an official all clear announcement.

Sometimes the water level may rise or fall noticeably before a tsunami.

All tsunami have the potential to be dangerous. Never go to watch or surf during a tsunami warning.

Have a disaster supply kit with:

  • Flashlights with extra batteries
  • Battery-operated radio and extra batteries.
  • First aid kit and instructions
  • Emergency food and bottled water
  • Non-electric can opener
  • Important medicines
  • Some cash and credit cards
  • Good strong shoes
