Being Prepared in Tornado Country

Because tornadoes come suddenly it is important to be prepared.

Conduct drills with everyone in your family and make sure everyone knows where to go to be safe and where to go after the tornado has passed.

Choose a safe area of your house to be the tornado shelter.

Know the difference between a "tornado watch" and a "tornado warning". A watch means the conditions are favorable to producing a tornado. A warning means that tornados have been seen.

Have a disaster kit ready containing:

  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • Portable, battery-operated radio and extra batteries
  • First aid kit and manual
  • Emergency food and water
  • Non-electric can opener
  • Essential medicines
  • Cash and credit cards
  • Sturdy shoes
