Being Prepared for Hurricanes

The FEMA web site What Should I DO has an extensive guide to preparing for a hurricane. Here is a summary of the important steps:

  • Plan an escape route
  • Have a disaster kit ready
  • Make arrangements for pets
  • Make sure all family members know what to do after the hurricane
  • Board doors and windows - do not use tape
  • Trim dead branches from trees

Since a hurricane is usually not a sudden event it is possible to take precautions as soon as a hurricane watch is announced. However, if you live anywhere where hurricanes are possible, it would be best to have supplies on hand at all times. The card on this page summarizes the important steps. Be sure to check the FEMA site for more information on what to do.
