Hurricane Andrew
was the most expensive hurricane in US history. The hurricane
hit on August 24, 1992 in southern Florida and then turned
and hit Louisiana. More than a million people were evacuated.
Heavy rains and tornadoes were also reported.
In
adjusted dollars, Hurricane Andrew Hurricane cost about 35.6
billion dollars in damages, killed 61 people and destroyed
more than 125,000 homes. It was a category 5 hurricane.
The 1935 Labor Day Hurricane
is considered "the most powerful hurricane ever to strike
the U.S. coastline." This was a category 5 hurricane
and had winds over 200 mph and the lowest barometric pressure
ever recorded. 423 people died.
