| If a tornado strikes unexpectedly while you are driving, do not panic, but quickly get out of your car,and head straight for a ditch or low ground to avoid serious injuries. Be sure to avoid telephone poles and other large objects so as not to be electrocuted, or trampled. Perhaps you may be in your house during a tornado. You should head straight for your basement and into the smallest room, or even head under your staircase. If your house does not have a basement to proceed into, head for a bathroom against a strong wall and huddle in the position shown here. Also, stay away from windows, if possible, or pick a room with the fewest number of windows out of all the rooms in your house. If you live in an apartment, go to the lowest spot possible, but if you live in a motor home, go outside and run to the nearest ditch. Depending on where you live, make a tornado plan with your family, and put together a tornado survival kit. Here are some of the contents needed:
-first aid kit -flashlight -radio that runs on batteries -extra batteries -a blanket -canned food [that does not make you thirsty] -water jugs [3 gallons per person] -pet food [if needed] |
