| The name hurricane comes from the name hurakan, but in other countries they call them other things like in Australia they call them willy willies, in India they call them cyclones, in China they call them Typhoons, and in the Phillipines they call them Bagios. When they name each hurricane they choose each name from an alphabetical list of male and female names. The first hurricane of the year gets a name that starts with an A, the next hurricane of the year gets a name that starts with a B, and so on. The list has no names that start with the letters Q, U, X, Y, or Z. Scientists have never needed to use all 21 names. |
