There are two main causes of earthquakes.  Some earthquakes are caused by explosive volcanic activity, but most are caused by the activity of the Tectonic plates.  The outer layer of the earth is made up of large masses of land called plates.  When these plates grind against each other it creates Earthquakes above ground.

Seismologists study earthquakes and try to detect where they will happen ahead of time.

Over 10,000 earthquakes happen around the world each year.
