Uncle Remus

The stories about Uncle Remus were written by a man in Georgia named Joel Harris.  These stories are in dialect, or copying the way people talked long ago.  Many of the stories are about how little animals outsmarted big animals, like Brer (Brother) Rabbit in the Brier Patch.

Where did Harris get his idea for the stories?  When he was young he worked on a farm and an old black man told him some stories that maybe came from Africa.  If that is true then the stories are a part of African culture as well as American culture.
