Cherokee Myths & Legends

The Cherokee are a Native American tribe who still live today in Western North Carolina.  They have many myths and legends.

     Most of the myths explain things that happen in nature.  Some of them include the Cherokee gods such as the storm god or the sun god.  It is important to remember that some people do not think of these myths as just stories, but as part of their beliefs and spiritual culture.

     Here is our rewriting of an old Cherokee myth:

Why is the blacksnake black?  Why are ravens black?  Why do owls have white rings around their eyes sometimes?
