The Brown Mountain Lights

Kids from our school scramble over the rocks at an overlook.  That's Brown Mountain behind them.  But we have to confess: we added the lights with Nova's  Photo Explosion!

Brown Mountain is a small mountain in the Blue Ridge in Burke / Caldwell County area.

People have always seen the Brown Mountain Lights.  The Cherokee saw them.  The first settlers saw them, and you can see them today.

What are the lights?  Most people see them as glowing round balls that go up and fade.  Sometimes they look like a sparkler and move, sometimes they don't.  Scientists cannot explain the cause of the lights.  But there are many legends about them.  We will tell you three.
