Long, long ago Earth had no fire. It was very cold on Earth. There was an island with one sycamore tree. There was a bad storm and the lightning hit the tree and started a fire.
A beautiful white bird named Raven flew to the tree and sat on the branch. It sat in the tree for a long time and all its beautiful white feathers became black. It flew away and was never white again.
A little screech owl flew to the tree and he sat and he sat and the smoke hurt his eyes and they became red. It flew away and has always had red eyes.
Then two owls named Hoot Owl and Horned Owl flew to the tree and looked down and the white smoke made rings around their eyes. They flew away and they still have white rings on their eyes.
Next a pearly white snake swam through the water to the fire island and it went into the fire. It could not take the fire, but it turned black and has been Black Snake for all the time after.
The spider looked at all these animals and she said, "I can get the fire!"
So the spider walked on the water. She arrived at the fire island and she made a basket out of her spider web. She scooped the fire in the basket, and went back, and Earth had fire and was warm.
