One of the most famous pirates of all was the pirate named Blackbeard. His real name was Edward Drummond and later he changed it to Edward Teach. He stole from ships in the early 1700's from the Carribean to Virginia. There are many stories about Blackbeard and his treasure. He was a very big man and he wore red ribbons in his beard. Sometimes he would light matches or ropes and put them in his hair or under his hat so that smoke was around his face. He looked very scary and evil! Blackbeard stole ships, and his favorite was Queen Anne's Revenge. It was a French ship, and Blackbeard did not like the French so he took this ship. Archaeologists found this ship in the water near Fort Macon on the Outer Banks in North Carolina. They did not find any treasure. Blackbeard married 12 or 14 wives. He was going to retire from being a pirate, but a man named Robert Maynard tricked him. Blackbeard had a party and drank too much rum, and the next day two ships came and they had a fight. Robert Maynard cut Blackbeard's throat but he did not die. Then the pirates stabbed Blackbeard with a sword but he did not die. They shot him maybe 13 times but he still did not die. Then they cut off his head, but his body swam around the ship 14 times, they said. And that is the legend of Blackbeard.
