North Carolina  Legends

    There are many kinds of folklore and we have picked two examples from our own state.  Both of these stories are based on things that really happened.

     Blackbeard the Pirate was a real person, but people have made his story a kind of tall tale by exaggeration.

     Virginia Dare was also a real person, a member of the Lost Colony of Roanoke.  No one knows what happened to the Lost Colony, but this folktale is part legend and part myth.
