The Mediterranean’s Lightning House

Stromboli is the northernmost member of the Lipari Islands. 54 km divide most nearby points of it from the „Italian boot”.

There’s a little needle near the volcano, Strombolicchio, and on its 43 m high to there is a lightning house guiding the sailors. Stromboli is one of the active layer volcanoes of the Earth. The Lipari Islands are becoming a real sight in Italy and in Sicily. The volcano used to make a huge eruption in every 100 years. It raised above the sea almost 160000 years ago. Its height exceeded 700 metres 35000 years ago, its name is Paleostromboli. The melted material means 1000-1200 Celsius degrees hot lava in the case of the Stromboli, it flows relatively fast. Lava flows are usual in every year. The explosions rich in gas are spectacular material-supply processes as well: the volcano can lift the stones as high as 150 m. Since 1985 seismic monitoring system watches the volcano’s every move.
