Battle of Bull Run

On July 21, 1861 the Union Army marched South hoping too smash the rebellion. On their way, they met Confederate forces marching from North Manassas, which was a Southern base.

The Union Army fought the Confederate Army for five hours. During the beginning of the battle, the Confederates were retreating except for one regiment who was commanded by General Jackson.

Jackson’s ability to stay and for his stubbornness, he was thought of as a stone wall. His nickname was then Stonewall Jackson.
The Confederates stayed at the battle until General Johnston showed up with 9,000 men. The battle changed and the Unions armies were fleeing back North.

The Rich people on the Union side thought that the Unions would win, so they all packed picnic baskets and went to a hill to watch the battle, thinking they would win. Instead, they ended up running for their lives, from Beaureagard’s army.

It was not a one sided battle on either side, like it was predicted. The battle ended out with 2,900 dead, wounded, missing, or captured from McDowell’s army, and for Beauregards 2,000. In the South, (Beauregard) felt victory, while North, (McDowell) wanted revenge. This Battle was the 1st serious Battle of the American Civil War.
