History and Description
The Chinese silver-grass was
brought to the southeastern United States from eastern Asia for looks. The plant
can grow 5 to 10 feet tall. The leaves can grow up to about 40 inches long and
about 0.7 wide. Its colors are brown and green. Its stem is most of the time
arching.
Uses
The Chinese silver-grass is used
for decorating yards. It
provides ground cover and reduces erosion.
Reproduction
The flowers start to bloom from
August to November. Its seeds start to release from September to January.
Ecological
Threat
The Chinese silver-grass is highly
flammable, which makes it a fire hazard. It forms extensive infestations by spreading to
roadsides and other areas, especially after burning.
Control
Thoroughly wet all leaves with an
herbicide mixed with water. Arsenal AC*, a glypho-sate herbicide, or a mixture
of the two is suggested.
