Personal Data
John Sumter was born on September 25, 1934 in Memphis,
TN. John Bull is married. He and his wife have a son and a daughter.
Education
Bull attended school in Memphis, TN. He graduated from Central High School
in1952. He received a Bachelor of Science degree of Mechanical Engineering from
Rice University in 1957. He attended Stanford University, where he received a
Master of Science in Aeronautical in 1971 and a Ph.D. in Aeronautical
Engineering in 1973.
Experience
In 1957, he
entered active duty with the Navy and went to Kingsville Texas for his flight
training. While at the Naval Air Station in Miramar, California, he flew F-3
Demons and F-4 Phantom II. He served aboard the carriers US RANGER, US
HANCOCK,
and US KITTY-HAWK.
He was assigned as a project test pilot at the Naval Air Test Center at
Patuxent River, Maryland from March 1964 to April 1966. John resigned from
astronaut duty in 1966 because of a pulmonary disease.
After Bull received his Ph.D. he worked at NASA Ames Research Center from
1973-1985 doing flight test research. Beginning in 1986, John managed NASA
research programs for space applications. He retired in 1986 and currently
provides consulting services.
Honors
- He graduated
“Outstanding Student” of his class when he graduated from U.S. Naval Test
Pilot School in 1964.
