Skylab I-
Skylab I was an Unmanned Mission. A Saturn V Booster launched the station into orbit.
Technical problems developed almost immediately because of vibrations during
lift off. A shield ripped off taking the two solar pannels with it because of
a critical meteoriod that hit the ship. Thankfully a piece of shield was wrapped around
the other pannel so it could not deploy. The craft was then turned so it's Apollo
Telescope Mount(ATM) solar pannels faced the sun. This was so it collected as much
electricity as possible. The loss of the other sheild caused temperatures to rise to 126
degrees. This incident caused Skylab II to be postponed.
Skylab II- Skylab II was launched on May 25, 1973 and it landed on June 22, 1973. It lasted 28 days and 50 minutes. The main scientist that worked on the craft was Joseph Kerwin, he worked with the commander Charles C. Conrad Jr. and the pilot was Paul T. Weitz. This mission was the first manned mission and it was a mission that rendezvoused with another mission. Skylab II met or rendezvoused with the first Skylab mission to repair the temperature change that was destroying the ship. They deployes a parasol sunshade that cooled the inside temperature to only 75 degrees Fahrenheit. By June 4 the workshop was in full operation. Many experients were conducted. The crew conducted solar astronomy, medical studies, earth resouce experiments, and 5 student experiments were completed. They made 404 orbits and 392 experiment hours were finished along with 3 EVAs which totaled six hours and 20 minutes. There were 3 mission achievments: 1. Installed a solar sheild "parasol" from scientific airlock. 2. Released a solar array wing on EVA. 3. Doubled the previous time in space.
Skylab III-
Skylab III was 59 days and 11 hours. It was launched on November 16, 1973 and it landed on February
8, 1973. THe commander was Alan L. Bean, the pilot was Jack R. Lousma and the scientist was Owen
K. Garriot. Maintenance of the spacestation and extensive scientific and medical experiments were
conducted. 358 orbits of the earth and 1,081 hours of solar and earth experiments were completed. 3 EVAs
which totaled 13 hours and 43 minutes were done. Mission Achievements were done also. They installed a twinpole
solar sheild on EVA. They also performed major inflight maintenance and doubled the previous length of time in space.
Skylab IV- Skylab IV was launched on November 16, 1973 and landed on February 8, 1974. It lasted 84 days and 1 hour. The pilot was William R. Pogue, the commander was Gerald P. Carr and the scientist was Edward G. Gibson. This was the last of the skylab missions, they observed and photographed the Comet Kohoutek among different experiments. THey completed 1,214 earth orbits and 4 EVAs totaling 22 hours and 13 minutes. They also increased the previous amount of time in space by 50 percent.
