Igor Sikorsky

Igor Sikorsky focused on a flying machine which could rise directly from the ground with a lifting propeller. On a family trip, he took lift measurements on a four foot diameter helicopter rotor. Mr. Sikorsky went to Paris to study aerodynamics and to buy components for his helicopter. Igor returned to Kiev in 1909 with a three-cyclinder 25 horsepower Anzani motorcycle engine and built a helicopter with a coaxial twin-bladed rotors. The crude craft had a seat for the pilot and his wife to change the pitch of the blades. Sikorsky's helicopter company is still in business today.
