Charles Lindbergh was a very important aviator. He was the first erson to fly accross the Atlantic Ocean nonstop on May 20-21, 1927. He then gained immediate international fame gaining names like "Lucky Lindy" and the "Love Eagle". After being born in Detroit on February 4, 1902 he then turned 18 and with his evceptional mechanical ability he went to the University of Wisconsin. In 1924 Lindbergh enlisted in the U.S. army. He was trained as an Army Air Service Reserve pilot and gained a great reputation. In 1927 Lindbergh won the Orteig prize ($25,000) tobe the first aviator to fly nonstop from New York to Paris. It took 33 and a half hours and Charles flew over 3,600 miles. He was honored with awards,celebrations and parades. Lindbergh had many jobs as a pilot. He flew for the postal service to just a plain old pilot. Lindbergh was also an inventer. He invented the "artifical heart." After moving to Europe afteer the kidnapping of his 20 month old son, he was invited by France and Germany to tour the aircraft industries of their countries. Lindbergh then flew 50 combat missions. He also developed cruise control techniques. Charles Augustus died of cancer on August 26, 1974.
