Virgil I. Grissom was one of the seven Mercury astronauts selected my NASA in Apil 1959. He piloted the Liberty Bell 7 spacecraft on July 21, 1961. This flight lasted fifteen minutes and thirty-seven seconds and traveled 302 miles downrange from the launch pad at Cape Kennedy. He was killed in the fire aboard the Apollo 1 capsule.
