During World War 1 he was a pioner in air pursuit tacticts. He retired from the Army, went to China and organised air defences for Chiang Kaishek. He formed the American Volunteer Group there. He was recalled to his duty, and he headed the U.S. Air Task Force in China (also known as the Flying Tigers) and retired as their major-general.
