Medicine
in the 2000s
Reader,
Lucky might not be the word, how about
fantastically lucky, now we can cure measles, chicken pox and much
much more. If you lived back in 15, 16 and maybe even the 17 and 18
hundreds, and you got sick you would die no question. But when scientists
and doctors work together, we can get amazing cures for terrible diseases.
Medicine is now
at it's highest ever, people still do die but at least not
as many people, aren't you glad that if you got cancer you might
have the chance of survival, you might not, but hey nobody
is perfect.
At 21st Century Medicine they are studying
cryobiology, the process of freezing to preserve biological
specimens. The word criobiology comes from the greek word ''kryos"
meaning "cold". Principels of criobiology are fixed in the Arrhenius
Equation, which states that all chemical reactions happen slowly as temperature
falls. For example: when the ezyme catalase is reduced from normal
body temperature it reacts at one fith it's normal speed, yet when is
rises back to body temperature it returns to normal.
This is important when doing organ transplants, it allows the
organ to remain usable for up to 2 days. This small opportunity has surgeans
going against the clock to make a succesfull transplant. The goal at
21st Century Medicine is to find ways to protect cells from damage so
they can function after days or even months.
