Fennel
In ancient Greece,
the word for fennel was marathon. This name was based on the Greek
victory over the Persians 470 B.C. at at a Marathon that was fought on
a field that had fennel seeds planted on it. In Greek mythology, knowledge
came to man as a gift from the gods , it was a fiery coal in a fennel
stalk. The ancient Romans chewed fennel stalks because they thought
that it would control obesity. In Medieval times, fennel was thought to
be a sacred herb used to treat diseases. Fennel was hung from the rafters
to bring good luck, and put in keyholes to ward off evil spirits and ghosts.
In American history, the Puritans thought fennel was a meeting seed. Meeting
seeds were seeds that parishioners chewed during church meetings to stay
awake. Fennel was used to be an appetite suppressant by the Puritans, and
they would chew fennel during periods of religious fasting to keep themselves
from getting hungry. Fennel was thought to cure many different medical problems
such as snakebites, toothaches, earaches, and colic. Sprigs of fennel were
put into a horse's harness to keep flies away.

the Norse word "dilla" which means "to sooth." The ancient Greeks

cleaning the mouth with dill seed boiled in white wine During the Middle
Ages, dill was thought to possess magical powers tobe used against witchcraft.
If someone thought a witch had cast a spell on them then they would make
a special drink with dill leavesto protect themselves or wear a charm made
of dill leaves. They also burned dill leaves to make thunderstorms go away.
It can also cure hiccups.
