Statistics and Current Issues

Camels

  • There are approximately 400 000 Dromedary Camels in Australia with approximately 50% of them found in Western Australia, 25% in the Northern Territory, and 25% in western Queensland and northern South Australia.
  • Camels consume more than 80% of plant species in the areas they inhabit. They are not fussy eaters; they eat the bitter, prickly plants that other animals leave alone.
  • A dehydrated camel can consume up to 200 litres of water in 3 minutes.
