There was a family that had several brothers. One of the brothers would be the next ruler. They heard that the youngest brother, `Aukele, was to be the next ruler. They found this unfair and decided to leave to find a place that they could be rulers. `Aukele heard about their voyage and that they will face danger or death on their trip. `Aukele goes with them even though his father has warned him not to because his brothers are jealous of him. His grandmother also gives him gifts to help him on their journey. On the voyage, the grandmothers gifts came to be very useful. They came to land that `Aukele warns has danger there. Instead of going as friends, the brothers shout out that they want to make war, and they tell a lady on standing on the beach this. `Aukele jumps out of the canoe and suddenly the canoe and brothers disappear. `Aukele goes to shore and meets the woman, Namaka. She destroyed his brothers with her Kahili, because she thought they were going to make war. Since 'Aukele is stuck there, they decide to make the best of it and become man and wife and Namaka shares her powers with him, except the power to fly. Namaka's brothers teach `Aukele to fly since she did not. They say she won't be mad once she realizes that he will stay with her even if he could fly. She is happy once she realizes that he does know how to fly, but he didn't leave. One day Namaka saw `Aukele weeping for his nephew who disappeared with the canoe. After several days of crying and of Aukele refusing to eat, Namaka tells of a way to bring his brothers back. He needs to get the water of Kane, the water of life. `Aukele flies straight toward the rising sun, but gets lost and returns home. He sets out again and makes it to an opening in a mountainside. He is sent through a bamboo forest, lama trees, and then loulu palms. He has to pass guardians to get there. They tell him how to get there once he tells them who he is related to. He makes it through and meets an old blind woman who tells him how to get the water of kane. With the woman's help, he blackens his hands to make them like Kamoho's hands, the guardian of the water of Kane. He goes into the cavern and gets the water of kane. `Aukele goes back through the loulu palms, lama trees, and bamboo forest, but wakes up Kamoho. With Kamoho chasing him, `Aukele rushes from the mountainside and gets back home to Namaka. `Aukele starts pouring the water, but Namaka stops him because he is doing it wrong. Namaka and `Aukele sprinkle some water over the waves and go back to shore as Namaka says the appropriate chant. When they look back the canoe is back with `Aukele's brothers. They are reunited.
