APOLLO 11

Event Description

The Apollo 11 mission was the first time man had been on the moon. Apollo used a LEM (lunar excursion module) to place two people on the moon. The LEM was made to house and support them on the surface of the moon, and fly them back up to the command service moduale (CSM). The electric four-wheel drive lunar rover vehicle was carried in the LEM descent module and provided a platform from which the ascent module took off to return to the CSM in lunar orbit.

The crew of Apollo 11 reached the moon four days into the mission. As Neil Armstrong was stepping out on to the moon he said; "That's one small step for man and one giant leap for man kind."

The mission was a success, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin were the first men to set foot on the moon in space history on July 20,1969. The world was amazed at their accomplishment.
