After getting married, he and his wife moved to China to work as an engineer. When the Boxer Rebellion broke out, the Hoovers were caught in the middle. Hoover's wife spent this time working in a hospital, while he helped to build barricades. When World War I began, he was in London, and helped to get 120,000 Americans back to the United States. Then he helped send food to Belgium after it was overrun by the German army.

Hoover's political career began as the head of the Food Administration during World War I. Both during and after the war, he helped to feed both Americans and war-stricken Europe. From 1921 to 1928, Hoover was Secretary of Commerce.

Shortly after Hoover's election, the nation entered a depression. Hoover still felt strongly about making sure everyone had enough to eat, but his opponents blamed him for the depression, causing him to lose the next election.
